Actually, the affair is a fund- raiser for the World Police and Firefighters’ Games, of which The Pez is 1989 chairman. Taking place July 29 to August 6 in Vancouver, with several events to be held at North Shore locations, the Games claim to be the world’s second biggest athletic competition after the Olympics. They will bring to town some 7,000 contestants from three continents to compete in 27 sports ranging from archery to wrestling — and enrich the local economy by many millions. Billed among the star-studded cast of ‘‘roasters’’ are Milton Berle, Don Rickles, Joan Rivers and Red Buttons. A rumor that Murray's new friend, world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, might show up as a body- guard for The Pez had still to be confirmed at press time. The more than 1,100 guests from the Who's Who of B.C. business and politics include Solic- itor General Angus Ree and wife Cheri of West Van, Tourism Minister Bill Reid, former cabinet minister Grace McCarthy, indus- trialist heavies like Edgar Kaiser and Herb Doman, and a battalion of Howe Street's lesser political acolytes. The tourism industry has been growing steadily since Expo 8&6, and the North Shore isas been seeing its share of an expanding tourism market. Tourists spend millions of dollars annually to see local attractions and beauty spots. But North, Shore tourism means more than the Capilano Suspension Bridge, Grouse Mountain gon- dola, parks and beaches. The North Shore is 2 naven for tourists because of its clean streets, its well-maintained buildings and its friendly people. But to keep the North Shore’s share of the tourism market, it is important for all residents to contribute in the North Shore’s upkeep, making it the best that it can be. Keeping our streets and sidewalks clean from waste and litter is 9 good first step. Sprucing up homes and businesses is another way we can show our pride for our neighborhoods and commercial cores, And most importantly, we can all maintain a friend- ty and helpful attitude teward our visitors. The result is more than a doHars-and-cents value — a strong sense of civic pride makes living in the com- munity better for everyone. \ JUST FIGURED OUT A WAY T0 POISON CANADIAN SEAFOOD, AND Ge) NAY WiH Peale ea Fret SOHC E Gt NOTH AND WERT LARC UUN EH Peter Speck Managing Editor Barrett Fisher Associate Editor Noel Wright Advertising Directur iinda Stewart Shote News. tuurledin Vrs, Publisher 1139 Lonsdale Avenue.
