Setting the tone for the day's events will be a talk by the col- lege's Asian consultant Dr. Louise May entitled Get Ready for the Global Century. May will focus on an international perspective, and a panel of visiting foreign and Ca- nadian international exchange stu- dents will explore their reactions to the cross-cultural experience. Later, a simulation put on by the college's counselling depart- ment wiil provide tangible evidence for their observations. Visitors can listen to the stirring African percussion of Themba Tana, translate the message of the Talking Drum, see the Strathcona Chinese Dance Company, and taste and smell the wonders of Sang Sun Joon, Kal-bi or Mexican chili. There will also be a Thai cooking demonstration. Finally, participants can com- plete the journey with a visit ‘down under’ for The Australian Perspec- tive by David Coombe, Consul General and Senior Trade Com- missioner of Australia. Jane Austen remembered JANE AUSTEN fans may not think there is much to celebrate in March — that is the month their favorite author laid down her pen for the last time in 1817. Bat North Vancouver Auste- nians will honor her works with Jane Austen Day on Saturday, March Ii from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 mm. The annual event takes place at Brock House, 3875 West Point Grey Rd. in Vancouver, and is open to any Jane Austen fan. The $25 cost includes a three-course lunch. This yeas’s speakers include Joan Austen-Leigh, the author’s great-niece five times removed. She will discuss the family’s recol- lections of their famous aunt. Austen scholar Juliet McMaster from the University of Alberta will present slides of her forthcoming book of illustrations for Austen's childhood novella, The Beautifull (sic) Cassandra. Her whimsical watercolors of mice, frogs and other animals in Regency dress tell the story of a girl’s adventure as a runaway Balladeer Jack Whyte will sing 18th century favorites including Barbara Allen and Robin Adair.
