Police backup ends for unlicensed WV alarm firms

West Vancouver Police will
froin alarm companies not

holding current West Vancouver business licences.

Alarm companies operating in
the municipality were notified in
September of the police action to
attempt to reduce the high in-
cidence of false alarms received by
the detachment.

West Vancouver, an alarm com-
pany must provide proof that it
holds a provincial security licence.

There were 20 alarm companies
licensed in West Vancouver last

year. But more than double the
number were operating in ‘the
municipality. To date this vear,
there are 36 alarm) companies
holding West Vancouver bu.ness
licences.

Records for October through
December reveal that tne false
alarm call volume is up by 26 per
cent over the same perio3 in 1987.

Alarm calls in genera! will con-
tinue to rise with in. creased in-
stallations. Industrs spokesmen
indicate that installations are up 40
per cent over previous years.

Police are also sending warning
letters to homeowners and
businesses where records indicate 2
history of excessive false alarms.

The West Vancouver initiative is
being monitored by the provincial
government and by ather
municipalities to see what effect it
will have on the false alarm pro-
blem.
