Human rights appeai comes to the Quay AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL’S Human Rights Now! campaign comes to Lonsdale Quay on Saturday, Cct. 22. Human Rights Now! is Amnesty International’s most ambitious cam- paign ever in the struggle for human rights. It celebrates the 40th an- niversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by members of the United Nations. The Universal Declaration promises that human beings will be free and equal in dignity and rights. But that promise has not been kept, says Amnesty. Around the world people are still imprisoned and tortured in violation of their basic human rights. Human Rights Now! is an attempt to use the force of public opinion to convince governments to respect and protect these rights. On Oct. 22, members of Amnesty International on the North Shore “will spend the day at Lonsdale Quay. They will have information about the Human Rights Now! campaign and will be asking members of the public to sign an appeal demanding that governments around the world respect the terms of the Universal Declaration. Similar appeals are being gathered internationally and will be presented at the United Nations on Dec. 10, Human Rights Day. but today, a whole new economy is emerging.
