‘4X4 OF THE Nissan Pathfinder captures awards flares, limited-slip differential, rear disc brakes, electronically adjust- WITHIN MONTHS of its world debut, Nissan Pathfinder captured major awards in Canada, the United States and Australia. In Canada, for example, members of the Automobile Jour- nalists’ Association of Canada voted Nissan’s new utility wagon **4x4 of the year’’. In every instance, Pathfinder’s winning qualities proved to be its unique blend of power, comfort, smooth ride, and rugged, go- anywhere versatility. . Part of its winning strength comes from sharing a well-proven drivetrain with Nissan’s Ba- ja-beating pickup trucks. But, rather than being simply a modified version of those pickups, Pathfinder has its own distinctive all-steel body, ride-height and dimensions. One eye-catching but highly functional feature is a tri- angular, swing-out side-window to ventilate the rear passenger area. Although still rated as compact, in size, Pathfinder’s payload, pas- senger and cargo space are all best in its class. For 1988, booming customer demand has encouraged Nissan to expand its Canadian Pathfinder range to three. models: the basic Pathfinder DLX, a new mid-range XE, and the top-of-the-line SE. ‘The XE and the SE are both pcewered by a silk-smooth 3-litre V6 with single-point fuel injection. It’s similar to the one which ‘ powers several other Nissan. vehi- cles including the 300ZX sportscar, Maxima executive sedan, and top-of-the-line SE pickup. For 1988, however, Pathfinder’s V6 has been upgraded to yield ad- ded torque and an increase to 145 horsepower. SEE PHOTO: PAGE 39 A brand-new automatic transmission is optional on Pathfinder XE and SE for 1988. It’s a state-of-the-art, electronical- ly controlled 4-speed with fuel- saving lockup mode and overdrive. The standard transmission is a slick-shifting 5-speed. There’s a two-speed transfer case and front hubs which lock automatically. Pathfinder XE and SE boast ex- ceptionally comfortable seating for five as well as a high level of stan- dard equipment. The XE can be upgraded with the optional Sport Pack while the SE may be ordered with the Trail Boss Pack. The basic Pathfinder DLX is a simpler vehicle also sharing much in common with Nissan’s pickup trucks. It’s powered by a fuel-in- jected 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, teamed with a 5-speed transmission. * Front-hubs are locked manually. Two bucket seats are factory- fitted and a three-place rear bench is available from Nissan dealers. Power assisted brakes are stan- dard on ali Pathfinders. All have disc brakes at the front and drums in the rear —- except Trail Boss, which offers high-performance disc-brakes on all four wheels. A proportioning system is included to minimize the risk of brake lockup. Pathfinder’s front suspension is of the wishbone type with stabilizer bar. Five-link coil springs with stabilizer bar are used at the rear to ensure the best ride-com- fort and off-road stability in its class. Standard equipment on the new mid-range XE Pathfinder includes: tilt-adjust steering, - full instru- ments, 3-speed wipers, clock, lock- ing glove-box, cut-pile carpeting, split. rear-bench seats, rear-seat 36 ~ Friday, July 29, 1988 - North Shore News | YEAR’ heating ducts, cargo area lighting, two-way tailgate with swing-up glass.
