His throat had been slashed. ‘ A’ second-degree murder charge was laid against Lakes three days after the body was found. During the 2%-week B.C. Supreme Court trial, the jury heard. that Duplissie, 24, was almost decapitated after being struck approximately 15 times in the head, face and neck with blows that were consistent with the use of a machete. Other evidence given during the judge-and-jury trial indicated that the incident was sparked by an argument between the two men over. Duplissie’s attempts to con- vince Lakes to start attending church, and that Lakes fought with Duplissie after Duplissie had swung what Lakes thought to be a rope at him. North Vancouer RCMP Sat. Brian Guzda confirmed Thursday that, prior to the murder, Lakes and Duplissie had been drinking at the Booze Can, an illegal after- hours bar on Seymour Boulevard that the two were known to fre- quent, The Booze Can has since been shut down. Other trial evidence indicated Lakes and Duplissie had also been using drugs. Guzda would not say if the two were involved in any criminal ac- tivity together. Lakes does have a criminal record, but Guzda declin- ed to give details.
