48 - Friday, December 18, 1987 - North Shore News FIRST THREE QUARTERS Construction starts make big gains CONSTRUCTION STARTS on residential, commercial, industrial and engineering projects in Canada recorded impressive gains in the first three quarters of this year ' versus the same period last year. © The only category of con- struction to show a, decline was institutional work. In square footage, the starts on all building projects rose 33 per cent to 332.9 mil- lion compared with 249.4 million last year. The dollar volume increase was 31 per cent to $18.2 billion from $13.9 billion. Engineering starts are only recorded in dollars and they increased 11 per cent to $4.4 - billion from $3.9 billion. Therefore, the total dollar volume increase of all con- struction starts was 26 per cent to. $22.6 billion from $17.8 billion. . Construction start data is compiled monthly by CanaData, an operation within Southam Building Reports. CanaData provides the . construction. industry with statistics and forecasts. The starts figures are im- portant because they are ad- vance indicators of the de- mand for the products of many manufacturers and suppliers in the construction industry. Residential starts have been extremely strong in 1987. In square footage, they have increased 36 per cent to 204.4 million com- pared with last year’s 149.8 million. In dollar value, they have risen 44 per cent to $9.3 billion from $6.4 billion. The East to West regional changes in value through the first three quarters of this year have been: the Atlantic +12 per cent; Quebec +54 per cent; Ontario +59 per cent; Manitoba -22 per cent;- Saskatchewan -11 per cent; Alberta +32 per cent; and British Columbia +38 per cent. ’ The numbers point out the particular strength in On- tario and Quebec this year. Among other factors, this - has tied in to the economic strength in those two pro- vinces. Also standing out have been the number of con- dominium projects under construction, especially in Toronto and the’ surroun- ding area, Starts on commercial pro- jects have continued their improvement over last year. The square footage has climbed 38 per cent from 52.3 million to 72.3 million while the dollar volume has increased 30 per cent from $3.8 billion to $5 billion. The regional changes in value have been: the Atlantic +145 per cent; Quebec +20 per cent; Ontario +49 per cent; Manitoba -27 per cent; Saskatchewan +58 per cent; Alberta -24 per cent; and British Columbia +50 per cent. A notable feature this year has been the strength in shopping centre - construc- tion. Among the shopping centre projects to start in the latest quarter — the third quarter of 1987 — have been the following: Place Laurier alterations, Sainte-Foy, Quebec; Square One addi- tion, Mississauga; an addi- tion to the Heritage Place Mall in Owen Sound; the Lawrence Centre Mall, North York; London Square addition and alterations and Westmount Mall addition both in London, Ontario; Northland Village Mall redevelopment, Calgary; and the Eaton Centre at Metrotown, Burnaby.
