A NEW study skills program that helps students do better in school also provides learning techniques that will serve them a lifetime, ac- cording to Glenn Hogen, vice- president of education for Sylvan Learning Centres. “The most important subject is the one that is rarely or never taught in public schools,'’ said Hogen. ‘‘That subject is how to study.”’ The new program, designed for students Grade 5 to adult, is elps students available through a network of over 375 Sylvan Learning Centres, supplementary learning facilities staffed by fully-acccedited teachers in four Canadian provinces and forty-one states. Adults also may enrol in the new program, which teaches study skills needed to improve their on the-job performance or to enter training courses for new fields of work. “‘Many people confuse imitative learning with true study,” said Hogen, a former public school teacher and principal. ‘‘They sim- ply parrot what a teacher says and they depend upon their memory to help them get passing grades. But students who merely mimic a teacher are like people who can't swim without a life preserver."* Hogen said the program is based on the premise that anyone can learn sound study habits. ‘it isn’t a matter of [Q or innate ability,” he observed. ‘‘We teach students how to approach learning, how to 57 - Wednesday, November 25, 1987 - North Shore News learn to study take notes, how to read 2ffectively, and how to intelligently hear and interpret what a teacher is saying. Only about 20 per cent of people of all ages are good listeners.’’ Besides instructing students in productive study habits, the in- novative program also stresses self-discipline. ‘‘This is especially important for children in single- parent or working-couple house- holds,”’ noted Hogan. ‘If parents perceive themselves to be too busy or too tired to help a child with homework, the self-motivated stu- dent can do very well in tackling new subjects,’’ he stated. Hogen said the study skills pro- gram also helps students face ex- ams without freezing up. ‘‘When students —- children and grown- ups ~~ feel confident about truly understanding a subject, a test is no longer an experience to fear. On the contrary, an exam then becomes an opportunity to dem- onstrate how much has been learn- ed,"' he said. Apply for Preferred Customer Status.
