ALL-TERRAIN BICYCLES
(ATB) are among the most techno-
logically advanced bikes available.

As a result of extensive research
and development and the use of
quality materials they are not in-
expensive.

A well-engineered, entry-level
ATB can be purchased for less
than $300, but high performance
models can exceed $500. Most rec-
reational riders, however, will be
able to find a bike that adequately
fills their needs in the $300 to $400
price range.

The primary distinguishing
feature of an ATB is its frame. On
regular over-the-road bikes, total
weight and adequate strength are
the main engineering obstacles.

For ATBs, the frame must still
be lightweight, yet must be ever
more rugged to allow riders to
readily shift their weight as needed
for uphill and downhill pedaling,
and be able to withstand the forces
exerted upon it from energetic
pedaling and very bumpy surfaces.

Another major difference be-
tween ATBs and regular bicycles is
the size and shape of the
handlebars.

ATB handlebars are posted a bit
higher in relation to the seat (or
saddle) than on touring bikes, and
this creates a more upright and
relaxed riding position. It’s a bit
more comfortable, plus it affords a
greater degree of. visibility for
sightseeing and avoiding hazards.

cally have well-padded handgrips
and saddles. Gear shifters and
brake handles are both located
conveniently so a rider doesn’t
have to release his grip to alter his
speed,

Perhaps the most unique feature
of the ATBs is the incredibly low
gearing which permits hill climbing
and pedaling through mud and
sand that would not be possible on
a conventionally geared bicycle: To
achieve these low, powerful gear
ratios, most ATBs have three front
chain wheels instead of the two
typical of touring bikes.

Riding an ATB, like any other
bicycle, requires a certain degree of

physical exertion so conditioning is
important. Don't try to do too
much too soon,

Before tackling hills or cross-
country jaunts, make sure you
become well acquainted with your
ATB and have enough hours of
biking exercise so you won't cramp
or pull a muscle. Uphill climbs
take strength and stamina, even
with extra-low gearing.

When shopping for an ATB,
choose a bicycle shop where sales
personnel show an interest in, and
a knowledge of, All-Terrain Bikes.
Ask plenty of questions and listen
carefully to the ariswers.
