Van District Library reading club blasts off ROBOTS AND aliens are part of the scenery in the children’s departments at North Vancouver District Library branches this summer. The library’s summer reading club, Star Fleet Nova, invites young readers to take a reading tour of the universe — from the earth to the moon, to the inner and outer planets, to galaxies beyond the Milky Way. Each astro-reader will receive bookmarks, booklists, a two-for-one pass to the Vancouver plane- tarium and a space-log which will be stamped at each stop on the cosmic journey. Participants can read what they like, when they like, and can therefore take their space-logs on holi- ay. The libraries have stocked up on enough science fiction and fantasy paperbacks to satisfy even the most voracious reader, and special events and displays during the summer will highlight the out-of-this-world theme. Astro-readers of any age can sign up for Star Fleet Nova at any of the library’s three space stations: Lynn Valley at 1280 E. 27th St., Capilano at 3045 Highland Blvd. or Seycove at 1204 Caledonia Ave. For further information call the children’s depart- ment at the Lynn Valley library at 984-0286. GROUSE MOUNTAIN is gearing up for summer and has scheduled a host of soft rock and rhythm and blues artists to perform at the peak’s Grouse Mountain Chalet. Geoff Gibbons is featured until June 21 and Mike Shallard on piano will keep diners entertained from June 22 to 28. The band ‘Brian & the Liars will be on hand from June 29 to July 5 to add some music to the mountain-top scenery. July 6 to 12 will give diners an opportunity to hear Lynne Donovan, and Valen Tinus will be performing from July 13 to 19 — just before the hang-gliding. Coupled with hang-gliding championships July 22 to 26, wild and crazy Tim Brecht will provide entertainment July 20 to 26 at the mountain-top chalet.
