Is your home a firetrap?

THIS YEAR, tens of thousands of
fires will cause more than $900
million in damages to Canadian
property.

Indeed, a fire will break out
somewhere in the country in the
next 7% minutes. In 1984, 598
Canadians died as a result of fire.

In spite of these troubling
statistics, however, many people
remain convinced that it won’t
happen to them, and often don’t
take the proper precautions.

The belief that increasing public
awareness of fire hazards is an ef-
fective form of fire prevention
recently prompted the Interna-
tional Organization for Standar-
dization (ISO) to organize a one-
day workshop on fire hazards and
security. This meeting, held in
Toronto by invitation from the
Standards Council of Canada, was
an occasion for experts from
Canada and abroad to focus their
attention on ways to better educate

the public on fire safety and
awareness as well as on fire control!
and prevention.

William MacKay, fire commis-
sioner for the province of Alberta,
told the delegates that the greatest
danger from fire is in the home —
and more specifically in the kitch-

“If we concentrated on home
fire safety, we could eliminate a
third of all fires, 77 per cent of fire
deaths and 59 per cent of the inju-
ries resulting from fires,’ said
MacKay.

He also pointed out that about
half of all kitchen or cooking area
fires are due to overheated cooking
