Because of the weekend, the last day for contributions is tomorrow, Monday March 2. - By BERT WICKHAM . : Contributing Colurrnist After then, all the shouting -wili die down and most of us will be completing our tax returns and hoping for a refund. . However, saving for. your retiremert should not be crammed ‘into ‘two short months between Christmas and the end of Febru- ary. The best way to build your RRSP funds is by making a regular monthly contribution. If you are already getting your interest exemption on your non- RRSP investments, then the mon- thly contribution should be made directly to your RRSP so that all the interest will be tax-sheltered. If you are not receiving $1,000 a year of tax-free interest, then the savings conid very well go into an ordinary non-registered savings or investment plan as the first $1,000 of interest would be tax-free anyway. Whichever way you do it, you will be further ahead if you make your savings on a regular basis all year round. If you are 65 this year and do not have superannuation or a company pension, remember you ean buy $1,000 a year of tax-free pension from your RRSP. If you have a pension and your spouse does not, remember you can help create a tax-free pension for your spouse by making contributions to ~ a spousal RRSP.
