Funding gives | cancer | lresearch; boost MORE CANADIANS than ever before rallied behind the 1985 Terry Fox Run and helped make the fifth annual fund raiser the most successful yet, say organizers. More than $3.7 million was rais- ed te support Terry Fox’s dream of finding a cure for cancer — a half million dollar increase over the privious year. ‘““A big thank you goes out to all the Canadians, coast to coast, who participated. The theme was ‘Bring a Friend’ and they came out in re- cord numbers,’? says Beverley Norris, national run director. Total participation in the run was up 27 per cent as 320,000 peo- ple waiked, jogged, biked or ran their way around the 10 km course at one of the 1,877 run sites. RAISE FUNDS In 1980, Terry Fox, who had lost a leg to cancer, decided to do something to help raise funds for cancer research and find a cure for the disease that kills 40,000 Cana- dians each year. Terry’s solution was the Mara- thon of Hope. He made it three quarters of the way across the na- tion and raised $27 million before his cancer spread, forcing him to quit. The annual 10 km Terry Fox Run was created shortly after his death a year later. During the past five years, the run has raised more than $16.5 million for cancer research. CANCER RESEARCY Why cancer research? According, to Dr. Peter Scholefield, executive director of the National Cancer Institute, ‘‘If we're interested in prevention, we have to know what it is we're preventing; if we know what causes cancer, we're better equipped to stop it.” Dr. Scholefield said, ‘Since the 1950s, the overall cancer survival rate has risen from 40 per cent to 52 per cent, but we still have a long way to go before we finally wipe out cancer.’” He said it’s still as important as ever to maintain the commitment te cancer research and to heip this cause. The 1986 Terry Fox Run will take place Sunday, September 14 at more than 1,850 run sites across Canada, the United States and around the world. tea ADULTS Give yourself a break. ® Upgrade your skills in English, ‘Math and Science. » Prepare for further study or for entry into the iob market.
