32 - Wednesday, August 7, 1985 - North Shore News Rude Reginald reacted ridiculously DEAR MISS MANNERS — With my parents, I attended a large cocktail party which was also attended by Reginald, the son of a friend of my mother. Reginald and I graduated from the same university but had never met, so I introduced myself to him. We conversed far a few minutes; then Reginald abruptly turned to someone else and began & conversa- tion from which I was ex- cluded. Luckily, 2 charming older gentleman promptly engaged me in conversation, or I would have felt quite adrift. Later some ladies at a jucheon gleefully informed my mother that Reginald’s mother reported that Reginald had thought it quite brazen of me to in- froduce myself to him and that he finds it a bother to be chased relentlessly by . desperate young female pro- fessional-schoo! graduates. Mother repeated Regiald’s comments to me and added that she would have warned me not to introduce myself to Reginald, bui that since I am such a headstrong young lady, . probably would not have heeded her. Miss Manners, I respect- fully request your opinion. Is it improper for a young woman to introduce herself toa man? What should Mother have 3zaid to the ladies whe reported Reginald's remarks? What if anything, should Mother say to Reginald’s mother the next time his name arises? Should Mother have spared my feelings and kept Reginald’s remarks to herself? GENTLE READER ~— Although Miss Manners could discharge her duty merely by informing you that you have committed no rudeness and therefore have nothing further to do, she finds herself unwilling to spare the rude Reginald. This person has slandered you by interpreting an act of commonplace sociability as sexual aggression, and Miss Manners does not want to let him get away with it. him, instead of warning you of his weaktiess. A version of this story may also be told to the other interested parties, your mother still all aflutter over having stirred up poor Reginald’s strangeness. You have nothing to do but to retain an air of bemused sympathy about Reginald’s peculiarity. And by the way, this is nothing more than the truth, A weli-brought up young miss manners by Judith Martin May we enlist your mother’s help? She was right to tell you of the danger to your reputation and indeed should have warned you be- forehand. Surely she is will- ing to assist now. She should begin by telling Reginald's mother that she (your mother) is afraid that she committed a_ terrible faux pas. Having forgotten that Reginald has his own — shall we say, unusual — social ideas, she encouraged you to do the polite thing and introduce yourself. Of course it was a disaster — we all know that Reginald is so, uh, sensitive — and now she wishes to convey her apologies to Reginald for having unwittingly distressed Mr Bani-Sadr president of Mountview Motors is pleased to announce the appointment of R.S.
