Impaired charge follows crash TCO MUCH noise and some unorthodox driving methods may have done in a driver suspected of having a little too much to drink early Thursday. North Vancouver RCMP said they were alerted to a possible impaired driver at 1:30 a.m. Thursday after a citizen reported that the driver of a pickup truck had knocked over two. street signs in the vicinity of Keith Road and St. Georges Avenue. When police responded to the call, they located the truck in the 100 block East 6th Street. The only problem was police arrived too late to prevent the driver of the pickup from backing into a Volkswagen parked on the street. Charges are pending against the driver of. the pickup truck, a 28-year-old North Vancouver man who was arrested at the scene. But while Matkin praised Capilano College as one of the best community colleges in the nation, he made it clear that the provincial government didn't have any more money, “Rapid change in industry can only be successfully met through education... Capilano has a very good reputation and it has been suggesied as one of the best in Canada,"” Matkin said. “But that perspective and good work does not change the fact that we are facing a very difficult problem... something has swept through B.C. and the western worid that is like a plague affecting our well being.”’ Matkin told the audience that tax money is ‘not there,"’ but he challenged Capilano College to provide services for the business community and then he would put pressure on the business community to fund Capilano College. “We all have a challenge and as you have said we ‘must invest in tomorrow's solutions today’.”” Matkin warned the col- lege, that they are dealing with a ‘‘glass half empty.” “Achieve more with less may sound contradictory, but we must give emphasis on education and we must do more with less,"’ Matkin said. Despite Matkin'’s promise of support for colleges from the business community, Capilano College President Paul Gallagher told the au- dience the college needed more money now. “Within B.C. Capilano College is a fiesty institution, it exudes energy and it pro- duces and I say it does more! And it has been doing more with less,*’ Gallagher told the enthusiastic audience. According to the Faculty Association the proposed cut of $1,000,000 or cight per cent of Capilano College's budget will translate mtu cuts of up to 300 courses from the present 1,480 sec- tions. The college’s preliminary budget from the provincial government is $10,950,800.
