C13 - Sunday, December 4, 1983 - North Shore News Ancient splendor THE GREEK PAR- THENON is said by some to be the perfect ar- chitectural structure. Tour TODAY’S COLUMN is an attempt at getting my mail up to date. First, a letter from a lady heading for Greece: DEAR BARBARA: I am planning to join a friend in Greece in late April/May for a three week vacation. We have tentatively talked of meeting in Athens for 5-7 days and going to a quiet island for the re- mainder. He suggested Cyprus. I have never travelled beyond business trips in busy North American cities and need help with everything like — clothes (type and minimum amount as I wish only one suitcase), how to be ‘*non-touristy’’ but comfor- table. Is it possible to find a cottage or personal small hotel at the time or must it be arranged ahead? If so, how? i'm sure you’ll know more than | on what I need to know. I have several books from the library and am pick- ing up some brochures from B.C.A.A. ANSWER: First, clothes. I wouldn’t worry too much about look- ing ‘‘touristy’’ — it’s almost unavoidable but since every second person on the street is apt to be a tourist you’ll be in a good company. The weather at that time should be excellent — not too hot but plenty of sun. You'll want several cotton skirts and blouses, drip-dry fabrics. Cotton dresses are ideal for evening. Don’t wear shorts and bare tops on the street or in public buildings. Even if no one refuses you admission or mentions your bare skin, Greek men will make you wish you were covered up. The Greek Islands that |! have visited were uniformly dusty so bear it in mind when you choose your walking shoes. Sandals aren't too comfortable when a half- pound of grit works its way between your toes. I'd take a cardigan sweater and a windbreaker, especially EXOTICA EGYPTIAN IMPORTS dressing for Greece a good idea to bring it along. If you visit any of the moun- tainous areas it will be colder in the morning and at night than on the coast. If it were me, I'd make a reservation for the first and last nights of the holiday and take my chances with the rest of the time. You’ re travelling early in the season and shouldn’t have too much dif- ficulty finding accommodation. I’ve been reading about some recent unrest in Cyprus. As you probably know, the Greeks and the Turks on Cyprus don’t celebrate Na- tional Brotherhood Week. Check it out before you go. For information on all types of accommodation, write: National Tourist Organization of Greece, De la Montagne St #1233, Mon- treal, P.Q. H3G 122. I wouldn’t want to spend a travel- wise by Barbara McCreadie ee if you intend to do any travel by boat. You shouldn’t need & raincoat — it’s easier to get wet occasionally than to bother hauling one along. If week in Athens — a couple of days should be plenty. When you visit the Parthenon, wear rubber soled shoes. The rocks one or two of your skirts has are slippery and the paths are a matching jacket it would be rough.
