The fire broke out at about 4 p.m. in the basement recreation room of a house at 945 Berkley Street while the owner was lying down in an upstairs bedroom. He was apparently quickly overcome by smoke and perhaps trapped by flames. A young man in the area noticed smoke coming from the house and ran to a townhouse where construc- tion work was going on in search of a phone. The house and rushed to produce a ladder. While two men attempted to break into the house through a locked front door, one of the construction workers scaled the ladder. When the homeowner, Over- come by smoke, collapsed in- side the room, the construc- tion worker climbed through the window and lifted the man out onto the ladder where a second man took him to safety. When fire trucks arrived at the scene the man was already out of the house. He was taken to hospital, treated for smoke inhalation, and released.
