Parents of students at Glenmore and Eagle Harbour elementaries have Started a political fund- raising Campaign designed to defeat trustees who voted for the five school closures. And a law firm has been hired to investigate the possibility of launching legal action to stop the board from putting grade sevens into high schools. A core group of 50 parents is working solidly at saving the schools through political pressure. Representatives from Glenmore and _ Eagle Harbour along with MLA Williams met secretly with Vander Zalm Wednesday to ask for a' moratorium on the school closures. Both the Liberals and NDP are looking at running strong candidates in West Vancouver to take ad- vaniage of the education issue. Many of the developments have come to light as a result of a secret council-of-war meet ag- held by Thu sday night. Speakers at the meeting mistakenly belicved they were speaking in .ccret, unaware that other parents had invited a North Shore News reporter to attena. Spokesperson Norm Davies told the group thai the information from the meeting “should stay within the room and within your immediate families.” lt was only after meeting discussed legal action and the political fundraising that they discovered that a reporter was in attendance. “We feel optimistic that we have been able to buy some time to put more pressure on the trustees to reverse their decision,” said Dale Shumka, one of the parents who had met with Vander Zalm Thursday. The parents had asked Vander Zalm for a moratonum on the schools the 8440 Bridgeport Rd Richmond 270-8434 HIZAVS ONY 1NO GY SIH. Shumka also told = the crowd a petition had been completed, affadavits had been sworn and that a law firm was waiting to file the petition with the courts to stop the integration of grade sevens into the high school system. That will not happen, however, until the minister decides to approve the school closure. According to many of the parents, a “groundswell” of concern over the grade seven issue had occurred as parents who were not concerned over the school issue are now realizing their grade seven children will be exposed to “drug” and ya FOR ‘ (plus 1C) PIZZA SPECIAL! He does not have - sufficient knowledge to take a side, it is totally inap- propriate (to say he didn’t see the urgency in closing schools),” Furk said. And what does Furk think of a moratorium being placed on the school closures by the minister of education? “Unacceptable. It would be government interference with the decision-making of an autonomous board, an unacceptable intrusion,” Furk said. There has been recent speculation, that if Williams wasn't going to run again, that Furk would seek the Socred nomination. Meanwhile, the parents’ associations are upset that the West Vancouver Chamber of Commerce and the Social Credit Con- Stituency executive who audience that Allan Williams did not see “the urgency” in closing the schools. However, when Margot Furk, a school trustee and West Van Social Credit constituency president, was contacted by the News and she responded with an angry criticism of Williams. “If Mr. Williams was sufficiently concerned, he would not have chosen to MISSING Since Nov. 13, trom Grouse Woods.
