6% RENT HIKE CONCEPT ENDORSED NV City supports Westview tenants By NANCY CAMPBELL RENT increases should be kept as close to six per cent as possible, North Van- couver City council decided at its meeting Monday night, and the provincial Ren- talisman will shortly receive a letter saying just that. Council’s decision was spurred on by the plight of the Westview Tenants Association, which is currently battling 26 per cent rent hike. David Pratt, speaking for the association, appeared before council] asking for council to intervene in the dispute. He asked the City to investigate the landlord, Allied Holdings Ltd., determine whether the increase was justified and to ask Allied to begin negotiating directly with the tenants. “We, as tenants, are willing to shoulder some financial burdens during a recession, but not 26 per cent -- that’s unacceptable,’ Pratt told council. “We're limited to five or six per cent in many years now, and the draperies by S. Alderman Gary Payne suggested the compromise of a letter to the Rentalsman making no specific reference — to the tenants association but nonetheless urging that rent increases be kept as close as possible to the six- and-five guidelines laid down by the _ = federal government. ; After some opposition, particularly from Alderman Stella Jo Dean who felt council would be put on the spot to limit its budget in- creases to six per cent, council approved writing the letter. Payne countered Dean's argument by pointing out that at the annual meeting of the Union of B.C. Municipalities the City agree to..limit next year’s budget increase to five per cent — a goal the city treasurer said was well within reach. He usually finds 50-60 carts in the immediate area and an average of four never make it back. Every year the store adds about 25 shopping carts at $110 each to replace ones which are unfound, and spends about $5,000 on maintenance of existing ones. Customers who disappear with the carts might want to think about where the store's cost gets passed on to.
