Vaccinations are still a goo

FOR QUITE a while
there has been a
relaxed approach to
immunization for
travellers. Perhaps it
had something to do
with smallpox vac-
cinations no _ longer
necessary entering
almost all foreign
countries. Years ago,
you could always spot
first-timers by the
unhealed sore on their
upper arms.

Most adults rarely give
any thought to the state of
their immunization. Quick
now! When did you last have
a dose of oral polio vaccine?
What about tetanus?

Far from being
eradicated, polio is staging a
comeback in many coun-
tries. There’s an outbreak of
whooping cough in Britain.
Diptheria epidemics can
appear any old time as well
as typhoid and cholera.

anywhere outside of Canada
and the U.S., take a minute

warehouse and a stockade
diminished by the
surroundings, along with

Dear Barbara: We are going
to Germany for a conference
in February. After the
conference, we'd like to
head south to find a warmer
climate. for a couple of
weeks. Have you any
suggestions?

ANSWER: You'll have to go
a long way south before you
find any sunbathing weather.
For example, hotel
operators in the south of
Spain get a'great chuckle
every year when guests grit
their teeth, don a bikini and
a FUR COAT and head for
the beach. °

Although it. doesn’t seem
like much of a distance,
North Africa is quite a bit
warmer than the
Mediterranean coast of
Europe. After five visits to
Morocco and one to Tunisia,
I'd hesitate to recommend
either country for an ex-
tended visit.

Middle East can be quite
pleasant in February,

Perhaps your best bet
would be an island such as
Tenerife or Gran Canaria
but be prepared for
anything. Just as winter
visitors to San Diego may get
lucky then can just as easily
get chillblanes.

Id recommend a flight to

any southern § destination,
leaving your cold weather
gear at your hotel in Ger-
many. You may freeze on
the way to and from the
airport but it beats hauling a
bunch of woolies. I've found
that European hotels are
much more accommodating
than North American ones
when it comes to storing
excess baggage.

Dear Barbara: Is there any
way that an average person
can get on one of those
famous free-everything
junkets to Las Vegas? I keep
hearing about these but
never any definite in-
formation so that I could
participate.

ANSWER: Ive been looking
into this question for several
days and I'm not getting very
far with my enquiries. I have
learned that these “free”
trips are based on the
amount of cash that a player
has on hand. They don't
want Mr. and Mrs. Joe Blow
with $400. The usual
procedure is that a VERY
large sum of money must be
deposited with either the
tour operator or the
sponsoring casino.

I clipped an ad out of one
of the daily papers with a
phone number in Surrey.
The number was supposed to
be a travel agency but the
operator tells me that it is a
private residence. Not that I
could get through - it’s either
engaged or the recording
comes on - “Cannot com-
plete -—”

If any readers have first
hand information on any of
these tours, please pass it
along.

a single woman to visit?

Auswer: It depends on a
number of variables. If the
country is one that
sequesters its Own women,
female travellers may find
that they are regarded as
“loose women” because they
are unsupervised. In some
countries, the age of the
woman has a bearing -
Grannie in her 70's is per
fectly safe while young
women are targets.

Poverty stricken countries
are possibly dangerous to
ANY traveller. There is an
attitude of “What have I got
to lose? I'm starving to death
as it is.” You enter at your
own risk, try to blend in with
the general population and
stay out of gringy areas.

If you are in doubt, plan to
visit with a tour group or to
stay at a resort geared to
foreign visitors.

I feel safer in most
European countries than I
do in Canada - provided I
watch crossing streets.
