SEARCHERS had still not
been able to find a man who
fell overboard from a cruise
boat travelling up Howe
Sound, by News press time.

The man, believed to be
very drunk at the time, fell
from the Britannia near
Boyer Island at about 10:30
p-m. Friday.

The search for him was
joined by two B.C. ferries, as
well as the Coast Guard
hovercraft and two zodiacs

’ but searchers were unable to

come up with any trace of
the missing man.

Also involved in the
search operation was a
waterfront resident who is a
member of the North Shore

’ Emergency Program’s Coast

Watcher group.
The man had been looking

_ out to sea with his telescope

and saw the drunk fall
overboard. He continued to
scan the water area while in
touch with the rescue

. coordination centre but was

unable to spot the man being
sought.

The Coast Watcher
Program is in the early
stages of formation by the
local Emergency Measures

group.
Somewhat similar to the
police's Neighborhood

Watch program, Coast
Watcher relies on the input
of people observing
situations from the water-
front and reporting problems
to the authorities.

Tully Waisman, who is
marine officer for the
emergency program, says:
“We want to get people all
along the shoreline from
Lions Bay to Indian Arm to
become involved.”

He says that waterfront

residents spend much of
their time looking out to sea,
especially those who have
telescopes, but even when
they see an emergency
situation many fail to report
it.

Waisman wants to
coordinate a list of all such
people on the waterfront so
the coastline is monitored
more efficiently by people
who will contact the rescue
coordination centre
whenever they spot an
emergency.

Anyone interested in
participating in the program
is asked to call the
Emergency Measures office
at 985-1311.

Boy freed from escalator

A YOUNG BOY who got his
hand stuck at the top of an
escalator in Park Royal
South Friday evening was
freed by firemen using Jaws
of Life metal cutting
equipment.

The child got his arm
trapped in the escalator of
the upper level outside
Eatons, at about 6:30 p.m.
and was returned to the
safety of his aunt after his
rescue by firemen.
