Editor: PAT RICH After winning provincial title NORTH VANCOUVER'’S all star Babe Ruth baseball team. North Vancouver has the best Babe Ruth baseball team in the province. And this weekend the all- star group of 14 and 15-year- olds will be going to Trail to see just how the team holds up against the best teams in the Pacific Northwest. The North Van _ team qualified for this regional tournament after they won the divisional title, and then provincial title at a tour- nament in Campbell River. The North Van side beat Squamish two games to one in a best of three series, to win the divisional title. They then had to compete against six other clubs in the provincial double-knockout playoffs. In an impressive bout of preliminary play, North Van overwhelmed Victoria, Campbell River and Prince George, 9-3, 8-0, and 6-4 respectively, to reach the final round of play. The team then faced Comox, a team which lost its first game, in the final. North Van dropped the first game 4-0 but because North Van _ had _ been previousty unbeaten and Comox had one loss on their record, the two teams played again to decide the title. In this game North Van side made no mistake as they downed Comox 10-4 to take the provincial ttle. Throughout the tour- HARBOURSIDE 1133 W. HASTINGS ST. PHONE: 689-9211 nament the pitching for North Van was shared by Korm Trieu and Andy Johnson. Players on the North Van side also captured a pair of individual awards. Shortstop Todd Baker was voted the most vaiuable player of the tournament for his remarkable display of fielding and hitting. Right fielder Mike Schemmer captured the most valuable batter trophy for the best batting average of the tourney. - The teanr produced a total of 36 hits in the tournament, including the no-hitter pitched against them in the first Comox game. The team also racked up an impressive total of 37 stolen bases. The team now travels to Trail, where they will play teams from Alberta, Washington, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Oregon. The tourfiament begins August 8 and will continue all of next week. The winner will advance to the World Babe Ruth Championships which are scheduled to be held in“ Mobile, Alabama. The team will be ac- companied by manager Bill Beckett and coaches Bob Tutush and Mike Senior. At ‘the Campbell River Jaycee start strong The North Shore Jaycee Rotary little league baseball team started strong in the provincial championships last weekend with a 4-0 shutout victory over Trail. Graham Alexander pit- ched a three hitter while striking out 11 batters for the win. Dave Coates and Ron Gardner lead the way in a seven hit altack with two hits aptece. The Jaycee team’s next match was scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday night against Victoria Triangle. Victoria Triangle were also victorious in their first game of the double- knockout competition being held in Duncan, as _ they downed Dunbar 4-1. Victoria Drive is the only team to be eliminated from the tournament so far as they were dumped 7-0 by Naniamo and were then edged 3-2 by Duncan, in seven innings.
