CHICAGO(UPI) - If
dieting isn't your thing and
you get breathless about
halfway through a romp
around the block, fashion
designer Bonnie August has
an alternative: create an
illusion with clothing.

Just getting rid of your
- blue jeans and wearing a pair
of pants with a_ vertical
pattern helps, she says.

That’s among 642 ways
Ms. August describes and
illustrates in “The Complete

Bonnie August Dressthin
System” (Rawson, Wade
$12.95).

“I wrote the book for
everyone,” August said in an
interview. “People who are
terribly overweight, slightly
overweight or not over-
weight — people who have
big bones and, even if they
diet down, they won't look
like the model on TV.

“Everybody can look
much better in a bathing suit
by using a few rules,” said
August, director of women's
designs for Danskin Inc., a
New York City manufac-
turer.

“One is to be sure the suit
doesn’t have too much
elastic to cut into your body
and call attention to trouble
spots. The other is to make
sure your bottom is covered
up.”

For women who are self-
conscious about their weight
problem, she suggests
wearing a cover-up with the
bathing suit — a matching
skirt or shorts tied around
the lower part of the body.

“If you can avoid un-
covering a problem area,
you're a step ahead.”

The biggest eyesore is
underfashions, she said.

“First of all, people don't
look at themselves in a full-
length mirror from top to
bottom and from all sides. If
they did, they would notice
white pants where you can
see the pantyline crossing
over thet rear end.

“You shouldn't have a
honzontal line across. the
rear end if you have a

problem there”

Pantes that cling cause
bulges that draw attention to
extra weight, she said.

Her “recipes” combine the
principles of proportion
August learned in art school
with some tricks she picked
up from co-workers and

clients in the fashion
business.

American Ballet theater
showed her tricks dancers
use to clongate their leg
lines. August said she in-
corporated these into her
fashion designs . and her
Dressthin system.

Women who believe they
have a weight problem are in
good company, she added.

“T've found peopie no
matter how fat, beautiful or
famous — even dancers —
they all think something is
wrong with their body.”

She said many famous
people, including Elke
Sommer and Nancy Reagan,
use the Dressthin system to
appear thinner.

“She really knows how to
play up her best points,” she
said of Sommer. “She's in
wonderful shape. I wrote
about her because people
could learn a lesson from the
way she carries herself. As
far as ['m concerned, she
doesn't have a problen.

“We really think (famous
people) have no faults, but
there are many working full
time to get their wardrobe
together. It just shows that
everyone can improve the
way they dress and look
better.”

China warns

PEKING (UPI) - China’s
communist leaders warned
the nation’s young people
recently against the sexual
revolution and told them the
“sluice gates of passion”
should be kept securely shut
until marriage.

“It ts regrettable that some
young people take a non-
chalant attitude and treat
their love as objects to be
disposed of at will,” said an
article in the official Peking
Daily, printed in an effort to
check a wave of sexual
permissiveness among
China’s young.
