An exhibition which marks that growth and pays tribute to the private individuals who were directly responsible for it has been on display since August 1. , Titled “*Recent ‘Acquisitions,” sixty works, valued in excess of $662,000 have been mounted for display. All but six were gifts of private benefactors who share a common interest in the visual arts, a desire to assist development of the gallery, and a desire to make works of art accessible to large numbers of people. The gifts were in sharp contrast to purchases made by the Gallery in 1980 which amounted to less than $20,000, a sum equivalent to approximately three per cent of the total value of that year’s acquisitions. Such restrictive purchase allowances have long been deplored by Luke Rombout, Director of the Vancouver - Art Gallery. “The Vancouver Art Gallery simply has _ no. purchasing power in today’s art mazket,” he stresses, “and we continue to lack the | financial wherewithal to take. advantage of auctions or to acquire key works for our collection. Our growth is almost entirely dependent on the generosity and good- will of Canadian benefac- tors.” The exhibition, financially assisted by the Government of B.C. throngh the B.C. Cultural Fund and the B.C. Lottery Fund, will continue through Sunday, September 13. Monroe on show at NV city hall Artist Gordon Monroe's sensitive watercolours have proved so popular that he will be hanging twelve new paintings in the gallery of the North Vancouver City Hall, 141 West 14th, to replace those sold since he opened his first major show last July 15th. The show will continue join us tor an evening of superb dining pase dancing on the North Shore. Compltetety New Menu trom selected Soatood to traditional Italian cuisine.
