for business tenants One person, one vote, in one municipality was the message -relayed by North Vancouver District council Monday evening as council voted down an attempt to oppose provincial legislation that gives a vote to business tenants. The debate, which evenly divided North Vancouver City council last week, and is scheduled for the Union of British Columbia Municipalities conference this week, was far more uneven in District council. Alderman Ernie Crist, supported by Alderman Mary Segal made a motjon to oppose the section of the municipal act which has been passed by the provincial government but not yet proclaimed. “It has taken the human race a long time to establish the principle of ‘one person one vote,” Crist said. “Unfortunately this has been changed by the government in Victoria.” Crist called the amendment “very, very unjust,” while his only supporter, Alderman Segal, termed the new amendment “ dangerous new a overy precedent.” Alderman Jim Ball op- posed Crist and went as far as saying he thought there was nothing wrong with business people having two votes in one municipality if they paid taxes on a home and a business. “While I'm a_ bedroom resident of the District of North Vancouver, I’m a business resident of Van- couver,” Ball said, meaning that he had a right to a vote in Vancouver. Alderman Jim Lakes noted that during provincial elections some Vancouver residents have two votes. Lakes said it would be “very refreshing” if people who had the opportunity did race to vote in the half a dozen municipalities to which they were entitled to vote as business tenants. Light-heartedly he said the new amendment may help to raise the poor voter turnout in the District. Crist’s motion defeated 5-2. was Referendum suggested over replacement pool An engineer's report to North Vancouver City council suggests that a referendum should be held in December 1981 to decide on the location of a replacement for Mahon Pool.
