north shore Ssnopper Over a 15 year period Bntish Columbia energy demands will moderate somewhat over the next fifteen years, according to a forecast released recently by Energy Minister R.H. McClelland. The forecast, prepared by McClelland’s ministry, predicts a modest increase of approximately three per cent per annum to 1986 and of two per cent between 1986 and 1996. By contrast, energy demands in B.C. grew at approximately 7 per cent annually between 1958 and 1973, and at 4.5 per cent per Spending an hour in a class getting into shape for summer may sound grim, but, says instructor Louise Preiswerck, you can have fun in spite of yourself. Preiswerck is teaching Capilano College’s Aerobic Dance, a fitness class which combines the lyricism of dance with the pracncality of exercise. Conducted to music, this program is designed for non-dancers — or dancers — or, for that matter, anyone who is bored with the “Sargent Major” approach to fitness. The concept of Aerobic Dance originated in California severalyears ago. Exercises afe designed to increase strength, flexibility, endurance, co-ordination, balance, rhythm and a sense of well being, bul more than anything they are geared to AN year since the emergency of the OPEC oil cartel. “This moderating trend 1s an encouraging — sign,” McClelland said. “It shows an increasing awareness of our need to use less energy.” The slower growth rate is predicated upon a number of factors, including energy conservation efforts, slower population and household growth and slower growth of the province’s forest in- dustry. Manufacturing, which currently consumes approximately half the provinces annual energy budget, also expected to making participants feel good about exercising. A leotard or simply comfortable clothing and runners or bare feet are all that’s necessary for this course which will be held in two different series — cither need less energy because of greater energy efficiency. The ministry estimates, broken down by region, are based on a comprehensive assessment of requirements of enerpy generated from various sources. The forecast says that natural gas supphes_ will meet foreseeable domestic demands, including possibile demands from Vancouver Island users, as well as existing export com- mitments. But the supply of oil continues to be an area of prime concern. However, McClelland noted that it is one of the objectives of the province's energy policy to reduce the consumpton of oil to 40 per cent before 1985. This is not only desirable but made necessary because the province's oil supply is being depleted rapidly. By 1996, imported oil will supply 86 per cent of the province's oil needs, compared to 77 per cent in 1978. .
