Convicted teenage siayer
Patrick Jerome McMurray,
19, of North Vancouver, has
been sentenced to two years
less a day in jail by Justice
Hugh Legg after a trial into
the strangulation death of a
Richmond homosexual last
July.

‘In passing sentence Jus-
tice Legg told MacMurray
that he did not doubt the
testimony of a Roman Cath-
olic priest Fr. Roland Joncas
who stated that the teenager
has had a history of being
possessed by evil spirits. The
priest had said in a seven-
page affidavit that the
suspect should have been
ruled legally insane when he
allegedly strangled Donald
Smith, 42, of Richmond.

However, Justice Legg
said he did not consider that
MacMurray’s being posses-
sed of evil spirits had
anything to do with sentenc-
ing or rehabilitation.

Defence lawyer Robert
DeBou asked Justice Legg to
consider the priest’s test-
imony in which McMurray
was. described as quiet,
well-mannered and non-vio-
- lent in his normal state. .

When evil spirits appar-
ently enter his body, the
priest - stated, -. McMurray
becomes violent, evil . and
sometimes sneering; and
singing rock music with a
silly smile on his face.
