Martin Millerchip Curtain Call millerchip@usnews.com IF you would like to see local theatre but are never quite sure what to pick, remember that the North Shore zone of Theatre B.C. produces its annual Festival of Plays every May. It’s not guaranteed that every night will offer stellar performances of challenging scripts, but it’s a safe bet that more than one production in the week will reach that stan- dard since most of the local theatre companies enter their “best.” Theatre B.C. is the umbrella organization of community theatre in this province and, among several mandates, organizes this annual play competition. The province is split into zones, and impartial professional adjudicators chose one play from each geographic area to compete at “Mainstage” (in Ladner this year) for top honours in acting, directing, design and best overall production. I got mixed messages all night long from this production. Great set, but a bathrobe cos- tame with clothes underneath; good lights, but an over-the-top sound score; wonderful understated performances from the actors playing snialler roles, but an overuse of screaming confrontation; great pace for the play generally, but Margot Finlay’s mother allowed to crawi through far too many fines. I have other criticisms, but let’s leave it in the hands of adjudicator Dean Paul Gibson and finish on a big positive: cast and director must be congratulated for resisting the urge to showcase the comic relief implicit in Claudia’s apparent flippancy and, instead, taking far big- ger risks in their search for truth and honesty. © CUP HOLDERS (4) © FLOOR MATS © FOG LAMPS © VARIABLE SPEED WIPERS ® LEATHER WRAP STEERING WHEEL & SHIFT KNOB @ DUAL AIR BAGS (FRONT) © SIDE IMPACT INTRUSION BEAMS © RING CAGE CONSTRUCTION © WCODGRAIN DASH ACCENT TRIM © 3 PT.
