tent and difficult insects to control. .

whole range of trees. shrubs and
plants in the garden. greenhouse and
house. Camellia, holly and citrus are
three of the more susceptible plants
that | have.

There are three forms of scale
and all behave in the same way.
Leeunium scale (2-5 mm hemispher-
ical lumps), Oyster seale (3mm and
oyster shaped) and San Jose scale
(2mm limpet shaped) will all retard
the growth of plants and even kill
small twigs when there is a heavy
infestation.

The newly hatched scale insects
are almost micrescopic in size ind
are mobile. moving to new sections
of the plant before becoming fixed
as hard scale. They attach them-
selves to the soft bark or leaves and
then suck sap from the plant. When
the scale pokes a hole in the plant
tissue to extract sap. the osmotic
pressure squirts excess sap out on to
the other leaves causing the sweet,
sticky liquid to form a black mould.

have a mould or fungus problem
when the real culprit ts an insect.

Once you have an infestation of
scale. it is extremely difficult to
eradicate them. A dormant oil spray
in the kate Winter or early Spring
before the buds break will help suf-
focate the scale. The young scale is
most active in June and can be con-
trolled with Malathion or Diazinon
at label rates. For the spray to be
effective you must spray the under-
neath side of the teaves and all sur-
faces of the branches to the point of
run-olf,
