Adult Com- munity Pops Band welcomes new Phone book recycling in place SPRING IN Vancouver means the chirping of songbirds and the “‘thump”’ of new telephone bocks as they arrive on residents’ doorsteps. This year all British Columbian households will be receiving phone books that are 100% recyclable due to the use of canola-based ink, water-soluble, non-plastic bindings and no varnishes. BC Tel also saved 400 tonnes of paper stock this year by printing its 1293 directories on lighter weight paper. While some collection: programs wer. in place last year, the old telephon. books. were not a valuable commodity, as the necessity of removing the binding made them a nuisance to recycle. With the improvements made this year, however, BC Tel expects te easily top the 500 tonnes of directories that were recycled in 1992, Different municipalities thorughout the Greater Vancouver Regional District are handling the drop off or collection of telephone books in different ways, depen- ding upon their existing residential recycling program. For information on recycling telephore books in ‘your com- munity, call the B.C. Recycling Hotline at 732-9253, or outside the Vancouver area, 1-800-667- 4321. In all, approximately 4.5 million telephone books are distributed threughout the province annually. Reducing the number of telephone books requiring disposal is just one way. that municipalities in the Greater. Vancouver Regional District are aiming 10 reduce waste by 50% by the year 2000. menibers. Info: 984-0352. eee June 17--Ongoing each Thurs. Thrift Shop open 2-8 p.m. Mt.
