Ragged Island is a series of por- traits of those people: Czech prawn fisherman Milan Pesicka: native artist Henry Speck; home- steaders Lynne Siebert and Liz Carr-Harris — people Poole came to regard as remarkably strong in- dividuals. Poole says he came to regard solitary travel ‘more as penance than pleasure. “tthink it’s unnatural to want to travel alone for fong stretches of time. fm a social animal... would like to have shared it with some- one else, but that’s not to say | moped...| don’t think you can have the same revelations and on- counters any way else but alone.” Aselt-contessed canoe freak, ideal access Poole chose the canoe because tt gave him access into the coastline that a power boat could not: he paddled so close to the land he could literally reach out and tap his paddle on the shore. It also allowed him to travel in total silence, often in the company of birds, fish and killer whales. Poole remembers how he felt when he finally climbed out of his canve after three long months: “My arms were like stovepipes n SEARS and my legs, withered and bow- ed.” That was summer's end, 1987. Ragged Islands appeared more than four years later. Poole admits the book took much too long to write, “Vm a plodder and a re- writer.” Then again, he did make a film in between, which took the better part of a year. Poole is hoping Ragged Islands to coastline succeeds as armchair travel. He says he was careful not tc make it a “hairy-chested canoeing book.” Will the film-maker star in and direct a film-version of his journey? Not likely. Although he’s spent 27 years as a director, producer and writer, Poole confesses he cannot bear stepping in front of a camera. “I'd feel very exposed,” he admits.
