These are two of the five resolutions presented by the Chemical Hazards Alert Committee CHAC to North Vancouver District council Monday night. The six-page brief, presented by spokesman Sharon McKay, calls on all levels of government to “immediately commence negotiations with Hooker Chemical for the relocation of its chemical plant" Another resolution op- Poses any expansion of Hooker “or any other hazardous chemical facilities on the North Shore” In two further resolutions. the committee governments to “rigidly enforce” all existing safety regulavons = pertaining = to hazardous chemicals and asks senior governments lo establish a public inquiry “to look the whole ject of calls) on mlo sub hazardous chemical products in Canada”. The committee, its a volunteer organization formed in February this year by concerned residents of the North Shore. It is not to be confused with the Task Force on Hazardous Materials appointed by NV District council whose report is expected in about six weeks. ‘ “Hooker cannot guarantee it will never have a spill,” McKay told = council members. She stressed the -lack of adequate emergency plans and said “comments from various officials in- dicate we have been lucky thus far”. The report says the escape routes both east and west have called tnadequate by Distnct Fire Chief Bob Mac Donald. “There are only (wo roads out of Seymour and both are in close proximity to the Hooker plant. She added that the Health Department “seems more interested in how the emissions affect plants”.
