Use imagination when
choosing wedding gifts

WITH SUMMERTIME comes
weddings, and with weddings
comes the inevitable search for just
the perfect wedding gift.

In earlier days, it wasn't too dif-
ficult to come up with a present
that would be appreciated by the
newlyweds — both were probably
moving out of their parents’ home
into a place of their own for the
first time, and everything from
sheets to bathroom towels were on
the wish list.

Today, however, most men and
women live on their own for at
least a little while before entering
the state of matrimony. Some-
times, brides and grooms have
been ‘‘baching’’ it for many years,
sometimes they have been living
together already, and sometimes
they have been in a previous mar-
riage.

In cases like this, when the pair
has enough to stock at least two
homes of their own already, the
wedding guests’ creativity is
challenged when it comes to choos-
ing a unique gift.

If you are confident that you
know the taste of the recipients, an
unusual piece of art or decorative
home accent is a one-of-a-kind
gift.

Or you might decide to give
something related to an_ interest
they have in common: season's
tickets to the theatre may be a lux-
ury they can’t afford, or the toan
of your Gulf Islands cabin for a

week in the summer — perhaps
complete with a few casseroles
waiting in the freezer — would

surely be welcome.

For the sporty couple, matching
bicycle helmets is a caring gift,
while health-conscious newlyweds
might appreciate an under-the-
counter water purifier.

Regardless of the gift you decide
upon, there are a few rules of eti-
quette that are easy to follow and
will help the bride and groom keep
things running smoothly in the
days before the wedding.

For example, the gift should not
be brought to the reception. The

Ideally, presents should be
delivered to the couple before the
wedding. Although they are tradi-
tionally sent to the home of the
bride’s parents, today it is best to
send them where it is most conve-
nient for the couple.

When you are purchasing the
gift, tell the clerk it is a wedding
Present and make sure they will
allow it to be returned. Some
stores have a discreet returns card,
which can be enclosed with the gift
and ensures that the present can be
returned quickly and easily at the
proper location.

If there is no returns card, you
may wish to consider enclosing in
the gift box a separate, sealed
envelope containing the receipt and
any other information that the
couple will need to exchange the
gift.

to easily exchange their present
without having to feel awkward

many stores take the time to do
this.

Some guests have an aversion to
giving a place setting of china or
cutlery. They feel it is rather im-
personal and would rather give
something unique and individual
so they will be remembered for it.

ple’s lifestyle is like. The Bridal
Registry solves all that. It tells the
guest exactly what is needed and
saves the couple from receiving
half a dozen toasters.

So, to the couple planning to be
married, find a store that will work
with you and use its Bridal Regis-
try. And to the guest who would
like the gift to be thoughtful and
appreciated, find out where the
couple is registered (usually the
bride’s mother will know).
