In the past we’ve run in toa lot of problems when people move around in the dark,’’ Charters said. This year alone, approximately 160,000 people visited Lynn Headwaters. Fair-weather fall weekends are among the most popular periods for park use, with hikers drawn to the area to take in the colors and to enjoy the bug- free environment. But said Charters, “‘You can get yourself into trouble pretty fast. Even at 8 a.m. it’s still pitch black w in the valleys.” Lynn Headwaters and the Seymour Demonstration Forest present the primary areas of con- cern for GVRD parks staff. The NEWS photo Mike Wakefisid parks are wilderness. Preparing for an extended outing in either should be approached differently than by park users planning for a stroll along Ambleside. For example, at Lynn Head- waters it is possible to hike 14 kilometres into the Burwell Col- iseum sub-alpine area. The area is only accessible on foot or by helicopter. ‘‘This time of the year, it’s really not feasible to hike that far, but people still do it,’’ Charters said. Beginning today, all parks close at 5 p.m. Before hiking at Lynn Headwaters, call the hiking infor- mation line at 985-1690, get a weather report from Environment Canada’s mountain weather report, pick up a map, plan your route, register at the park kiosk and always carry a flashlight. Ryan attends Carson Graham Secondary School in grade 8 where his favourite subjects are Science and PE. He is on the rugby team and thoroughly enjoys the sport. Practices and games take up much of his alter school time, and he also managed to see the New Zealand All Black team play BC’s rugby team recently. Outside of school, Ryan likes to play football and Nintendo games. He also likes to see an occasional movie.
