LYNN CANYON ECOLOGY CENTRE Storm drain marking program applauded THE LYNN Canyon Ecology Centre’s storm drain marking program to raise awareness of local creek pollution has been deemed by federa! and provincial fisheries departments to be one of the most successful and best organized in B.C. Officials from both levels of government recently observed a training session y?ven at the centre both to evaluate che program and to see which of its features could be adapted and used in other pro- grams around the province. The program employs volunteers to paint bright yellow fish symbols beside and atop area storm drains. It was initiate? by provincial and federal government fisheries departments three years as part of a campaign aimed at raising public awareness of the serious threat to fish and creek environments posed by used oil, solvents, pesticides and other chemicals regularly dumped down those drains by area residents. Program budget funds in the Lower Mainland, which have averaged about $20,000 annually, come from the provincial Habitat Conservation Fund. Peter Caverhill, a fisheries By TIMOTHY RENSHAW News Reporter biologist with the provincial en- vironment ministry, said the gov- ernment observers were ‘‘very im- pressed’’ with the program that has bees: developed by the ecology centre and want to incorporate some of its features in other pro- grams around the province. The Nozth Shore, Caverhill said, was one of the first areas in B.C. to initiate drain marking because of its concentration of creeks and because of the enthusiasm which local municipal governments showed for the program. Virtually all storm drains on the North Shore run into area creeks and most of those creeks run into the area’s four major waterways: Lynn Creek, MacKay Creek and the Seymour and Capilano rivers. LYNN Canyon Ecology Centre chief naturalist Kevin Bell .-.‘program is open to everyone.” the centre’s program is unique in the province because it provides special one-hour training sessions for the various groups who volun- teer to paint fish on the North Shore storm drains. He said the groups are usually made up from locai schools and youth organizations such as Brownies and Cub Scouts, ‘‘but the program is open to everyone.’’ SAVE 13 - Sunday, December 4, 1988 - North Shore News The training sessions include films on stream ecology and a slide show on the storm-drain marking program and the pollution pro- biems that threaten loca! creeks. Caverhill said the program is simple and effective in informing people that there are fish popula- tions in area streams and that storm drains are a source of pollu- tion. Although the Lynn Canyon SIZE 6 ONLY : Ladies’ Nylon Boots Shoe Factory Outlet Main & Mountain Hwy., North Van. 986-6566 Ecology Centre, through its pro- gram, has painted approximately 1,000 local drains with fish sym- bols, Bell said the number only Tepresents !0 to 15 per cent of the total on the North Shore. He said the program needs help in all areas of the North Shore, but especially in its western and eastern extremities.
