YOUR CAR knocks or pings under foad, such as
when going up a long hill. Or perhaps it’s losing
power or is hard to start. Your mechanic may (ell you
your timing is off.

This critical adjustment determines the precise point
at which the spark plug will fire, igniting the fuel/air
mixture in the combustion chamber.

IC is computer-controfled on many new cars but, on
the vast majority of engines, timing still must be set
according to factory specifications.

If timing is over-advanced, meaning the spark oc-
curs tvo soon, you'll probably hear engine knock. In
extreme cases, this condition causes combustion
chamber temperatures to rise to the point at which
spark plugs are damaged or a hole can be burned
through the top of a piston.

When you hear that familiar sound sometimes
referred to as spark knock, check it out, advise
mechanics.

Beyond timing adjustment, there are other causes of

attenti

this condition, including fuel octane too low,

overheating of the engine, buildup of carbon in the

combustion chamber and/or malfunction of the fuel
or emission controlt systems.

Whatever the reason, spark knock should be cor-
rected quickly to protect the engine.

Less hazardous to the engine is retarded timing, in
which ignition occurs too late.

This will cause rough, sluggish engine performance
and poor gas mileage.

There is a popular misconception that cars with
electronic ignition do not require checking of ignition
timing. Wrong.

This adjustment is a standard procedure with a
tune-up and, if symptoms so dictate, in’ between
tune-ups as well.

A diagnostic checkup with clectronic equipment is a
good preventive measure, especially when the first
sounds ef spark knock appear.
