16 ~ Friday, August 19, 1988 ~ North Shore News ACCORDING TO statistics from recent years, millions of children in this country ayid 16 and under are injured accidentally each year, and thousands of children under 15 years of age are fatally injured, annually. One child in two is injured severely enough to require medical attention, or to have his or her ac- tivities restricted for one or more days. Many of the dangers which may pose a threat to infants or young children are present in kitchens and bathrooms. To help prevent accidents, ex- perts offer parents some sugges- tions for childproofing these areas of the home. In the kitchen, safety precau- tions should be observed in regard to appliances, particularly the kitchen stove. To safeguard against burns, children should be kept away from the stove. Never allow them to lean or climb on it. Little children can burn themselves seriously by falling against a hot oven surface, or by reaching up to touch a burner. If a child is in the kitchen while cooking is going on, confine him or her to a playpen or away from the stove area. Also, unless all four burners are needed, only use the back two. While cooking, keep pot handles turned toward the back of the stove, to avoid having them ac- cidentally pulled off the top. Don’t store goodies children want — such as cookies and can- dies — over the stove. This tempts children to climb up to get them. Other kitchen appliances which could be hazardous to children are electric food processors, toasters, blenders and juicers. Be sure to store sharp appliance blades where children are unable to reach them. Sharp utensils, primarily knives, should be safely locked in drawers or placed in special wall racks, far above a child's reach. Other dangerous objects, such as tacks, needles, pins, scissors and keys, should also be stored beyond reach. Special safety latches are design- ed with children’s protection in mind. Poisoning is one of the most common pediatric emergencies ex- perienced among children under five years of age. It is also one of the most difficult to treat. Each year in North America, more than 500,000 children swallow household materials, often resulting in death. Eliminate the cnance of poison- . ing by securing flocr level cabinets that contain cleansing and waxing agents , aerosols, insect sprays and other poisonous substances. Whenever possible, keep no more household substances than are actually needed or purchase only those with child-resistant packaging. Most serious poisonings occur while a toxic substance is actually being used. Be careful not to leave cleaning agents on surfaces which are easily accessible to toddlers. When answering the telephone or doorbell, keep these items in hand. Also, if ant and roach traps are used in the kitchen, make sure they are out of reach of a crawling child. Poisonous plants should be removed, or placed beyond reach too. If your child has swallowed or is See Protect Page 18 Come to the Gas BBQ Experts BARBECUE PARTS UNLIMITED INC.
