SOME TRAVELLERS don’t care a lot about the hotel they
book as long as it’s clean, cheap and perhaps even quiet and

convenient.

Others care only that the hotel belong to a

prestigious chain — name-dropping to the neighbors is no
fun if you must confess, ‘‘Motel 6’.

Then there are the connoisseurs.
They look for the jewels of the
hotel industry, the unique inns and
massive historical shrines. They
collect hotels like vintage wines
and are always looking for new
ones to savor.

Hotel and the Hotel del Coronado

— couldn’t be more different and .
yet both have that air about them _
that is impossible to resist. Unless‘!

you actually like Motel 6.

Let’s. start with ‘ the;.Horton.
‘Grand. The present hotel isn’t the ey

original-and yet it is, partly. Back
in the 1880s the Horton and the
Kahle Saddlery hotels were’ ‘the
places to stay in San Diego. But, as
with many other fine old hotels,
over the years. they began falling
apart — one eventually became a
flop-house and the other a
warehouse.

In 1981, both were scheduled for
the wrecker. That’s when the his-
torical society started screaming. It
was decided that the only way they

could be saved was to move them.

Since aeither had any supporting
beams inside, both were dismantl-
ed brick by brick, labelled, moved
and reassembled.

als in the new Horton are original.
Today, they stand as one. Every
room .is different including both
interior design and shape. And
every room has a working

fireplace. All the furniture is anti-
que.

Located in the heart of the his-
torical part of downtown San
Diego (Gaslamp Quarter), it has ail
the features you'll find in any fux-
ury hotel and one thing more — an
alleged ghost. Oh, well, you can't
believe everything you hear.

The Hotel Coronado is entirely
different. It's been standing in the
same place for 100 years and
shows no signs of moving. The
elegance of it! Naturally it has
been completely updated but the
Victorian air is still there.

Being outside the city, it has
several advantages that the Horton
Jacks: gardens, beaches and pools.
Lots of tennis courts.

Since the del Coronado has
never slipped down to a flophouse
it's had plenty of famous visitors.
Probably the juiciest bit of scandal
is that it was in the del Coronado’s
ballroom that the Prince of Wales
first met ‘‘the woman J} love,"’
Wallis Simpson.

I visited the hotel in December
and it was beautifully decorated
with a very special theme. For any
