ANN ARBOR, Mich. (UPI) -
Increases “in the legal
minimum ‘drinking age in
Michigan. and Maine —
dramatically reduced the
numbers of alcohol-related
crashes, a University of
Michigan study shows.

The®-study at the
university's Highway Safety
ResearchInstitute compared
fatality. -figures in the two
states where the drinking age
was raised, to statistics in
New York.and Pennsylvania,
where the ages remained
unchanged._

“Those findings, when
compared with trends in the
data fromthe ‘control’ states
of New York and Penn-

sylvania,; support the ©

conclusion that higher legal
drinking ages are an ef-
fective countermeasure for
alcohol-related motor
vehicle crashes, the leading
cause of death among
youth,” said researcher
Alexander C Wagenaar.

The study, released Nov.
3, was conducted under a
grant from the National
Institute on Alcohol, Abuse
and Alcoholism and
examined traffic fatality
figures from 1972 to 1979.

Michigan raised its
minimum drinking age to 21

in December, 1978. Maine
raised its to 20 in October,

1977. New York has a.

minimum age of 18 and
Pennsylvania's drinking age
was 21.

Wagenaar said the higher
drinking age in Michigan
reduced serious property
damage crashes by 17 per
cent and personal injury
crashes among 18- to 20-year
old drivers by 20 per cent.

The study = said the
statistics translated into
1,200 fewer traffic injuries to
young Michigan drivers after
the implementation of the
higher drinking age law.

In Maine, the raised
drinking age was responsible
for a 20 per cent reduction in
property damage crashes.
However, the study showed
there was no significant
effect on injury crashes.
