The other side of Dave Williams is the one younsters like Robby Clarke (in photo at right) see when the Tiger drops by to help oul the Special Olympics program. Williams became involved in the program while playing in Toronto and continued his activities during his stay in Van- couver. ON program for special kids ONE OF THE memorable moments in the lack- lustre history of the Vancouver Canucks hockey club was an overtime goal that beat the Calgary Flames in the first round of the playoffs that miraculous year the lads made it all the way to the Stanley Cup final. The goal was not a thing of beauty but the Uuming was perfection. It broke the Flames’ spint and propelled the Canucks to uncharted post-season heights. The goal was not scored by Thomas Gradin and Stan Smyl but, rather, came off a typically crude backhander by Dave **Tiger’’ Williams. Many of us still have a clear picture of The Tiger charging down the ice after- wards, going into his victory shuffle with delirious team- mates hanging off his back. While Williams — who was dealt to Detro# Red Wings Aug. 8 for journeyman winger Rob Mc- Clanahan — gave Vancouver fans many entertaining moments on and off the ice, -here is a group of individuals that will remember him more for his presence out of uniform, at -a North Shore high school gymnasium or a Richmond Community Centre. That's because Wilhams has a flip-side to his com- bative on-ice personality For the past 10 years, the pugnacious left-winger has By JIM JAMIESO been deeply involved with the Special Olympics both at the coaching and fund-raising levels. And because of that, his move to Detroit will much more than deprive the local media of colorful quotes — it will also create a not-insub- stantial vacuum in the B.C. Special Olympics program. “**It will definitely affect it (my participation) locally,’’ says Williams, who will be moving his family to the Detroit area in September but plans te_return to his North Vancouver heme in the off- season. ‘‘During the winter- ume I was doing something (for Special Olympics) one night a week — except, of course, during road _ trips. Obviously, I won't be in a posiuon to do that now.’’ Bill Bean, executive direc- tor of the B.C. Special Olym- pics, is hopeful that Willams can continue his work with the program on some basis.
