A7 - Sunday, October 9, 1983 - North Shore News M8 mailbox >><| Dear Editor: Probably very few ‘‘letters to the editor’’ writers end up in the middle of as much con- troversy as myself! However, much as | respect the right of others to disagree with me, | will not tolerate the charge by the N.S. Women’s Centre that | am trying to ‘‘misin- form’’ others. Therefore, could I please set the record straight. e Legal Aid - NSWC charge that the budget has been cut by 2 million. They are not correct. The budget, as | stated, is unchanged at 13.4 million from last year. The 2 million the NSWC is referring to was in the form of two special grants but was | never part of the original budget. The total Legal Aid expenses for the Province of B.C. last year was a stagger- ing 20 million! The Govern- ment provided 15.7 million and the remainder was from the Legal Aid Society and federal government. * Rentalsman - While the NSWC are correct that some rent controls are being removed, I was also correct in the laws that I quoted which are stilJ in effect to protect the renter. . ¢ Post Partum counselling - the NSWC are correct that a centre in Vancouver City will be closed, however | made it crystal clear that this service is still available to the women of the North Shore. The Health Board will not only offer counselling at the. ‘*Well Baby Clinics’’ but will also go to the new mother’s home to counsel her. e Treatment Centre for sexually abused children - the NSWC can play with figures to their heart’s content but the fact is there is not now, nor has there ever been, a centre exclusively for sexually abused children. As far as Maplernidge Centre is con- cerned the government is hoping to privatize this centre as well as Transition House. e Transition House - what the NSWC should realize is that out of all the 23 ‘safe houses’ in B.C., Transition House is the only one staffed by ministry workers. One on- ly has to look at the employee benefits to the public service employees to realize that it would probably be much more economical to ‘*privatize.’’ I have been told that between 81-82 the government spent 2.2 million on Transition Houses. I have forwarded both my and the NSWC letters to the Ministry in the hopes that both the NSWC and myself can have access to the same information, hence | will not have the need to check the NSWC files at all! As far as their kind invita- tion to visit their centre, | have a feeling that with my ‘‘right wing’’ views, I would be about as welcome as a cockroach jumping out of the sugar bowl at the Queens garden party. Thanks, but no thanks! Sue Cook North Vancouver Schools budget cut manageable Dear Editor: Recent statements in_ the North Shore News by your staff and by North Van- couver School Trustees claiming that the North and West Vancouver Schools to be the hardest hit financially by the Government restraint program, do not tell the whole story. They rightly claim that the North Vancouver Schools budget is being reduced by almost fifteen per cent over the next three years while the average reduction throughout the province ts TIME | of Day. When the cost per pupil is calculated North Vancouver loses almost the same amount as the provincial average, between 6% and 7%. With judicious management of their finances the school districts should have no dif- ficulty in handling this small decrease.
