A2 - Sunday, October 9, 1983 - North Shore News District says sewage truck not enough to deal with woes THE PURCHASE of a sewage pump truck is not going to help North Vancouver District handle any possible sewage pump station overflows, because the 3,500 gallon truck could not alleviate the amount which many district pumps are capable of discharging. District director of Engineering Services, E.J. Bremner told council Mon- day night that Ald. Ernie Crist’s suggestion that the District look into the pur- chase of a pump out-tanker to handle emergency situa- tion overflows was not practical. ‘*While this solution would have merit if the pump sta- ~ B ‘ tions flows were small, un- fortunately the flows in the majority of our stations are such that they could not be handled in this manner,’’ Bremner told council. ‘‘For example the Ross and Allan station has a peak flow of ap- proximately 1,000 gallons per minute.’’ Bremner estimated that if there was a spill, the average Woodward: ITS TO mA BRIEAIN The next best way to taking them yourself pump out truck could only handle three and half minutes of the flow. “It is obvious therefore that this solution could not prevent overflows, but simp- ly reduce, and then only in a minor way, the amount of discharge,’’ Bremner said. Crist was concerned that the District was not doing enough in searching for solu- tions to the overflow of sewage into watercourses. Crist pointed to the fact that the District had already been found guilty of dump- ing of ‘‘deleterious substances such as raw NE A“E™ sewage into watercourses fre- quented by fish.”’ ‘*Surely in this day and age when we can put a man on the moon, we can find a solu- tion to the problem of pump Stations overflowing,’’ Crist told the News after the meeting. Council ignored Crist’s plea to look into the pump truck solution further. “YT think we should in- vestigate it and get some facts and figures... it would appear that some members are afraid to read a report, I’m not afraid to read a report,’’ Crist said. COLONEL SAUNDERS knows how to sell chicken, but when it comes to selling North Vancouver District Council on its outlet’s cor- porate image, ‘‘quaint,’’ was not what council wanted to hear. The White Spot applica- tion to build a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise at Marine Drive and Lloyd Avenue was deferred by council. The building was described as a ‘‘quaint cottage building but with a metal rust colored mansard roof with a New England type cupola.’’ After a lenthy debate on the merits of maintaining corporate image versus the ‘“cohesive order of the urban Chicken image doesn’t sit well fabric,’’ council decided to give the developers another chance to make the necessary changes to meet district design guidelines. W.V. council takes break THE REGULAR meeting of the West Vancouver Council will not be held as scheduled Oct. 11. The meetings have been cancelled due to the short week caused by the Thanksgiving holiday on Monday, Oct. 10. ee Bae The nicest way to say ‘Merry Christmas’ to friends and relatives in Great Britain.
