Rowntree runs for trustee West Vancouver business executive Gordon Rowntree has announced that he will seek the West Van School Board seat being vacated by retimng chairman Audrey Sojonky. Rowntree is presently completing his second year as a trustee on the Board of the West Vancouver Memonial Library, and is a founding member and Vice- Chairman of the West Vancouver Foundation Society. “There is a need for some new approaches to the problems facing the school board,” Rowntree said. “There are three main areas of concern. I am alarmed at the $2 million reduction by the provincial government this year, and the possibility that there may be further reductions which could cause a_ substantial increase in taxes. “Care must be taken that no expensive new programs are introduced unless strongly advocated by the community. It could mean the postponement of some specialized programs af- fecting only small numbers of students. What parents want are the basic programs that provide the real values of education for their children.” Rowntree said that he hopes to be able to make a contnbutuon toward solving More reasonably priced housing, special housing for the handicapped and elderly and concern about chemical hazards are the big issues for Mary Segal. That's the message from West Van Mayor Derrick Humphreys who points out that voters this year can concentrate on school board personalities and_ policies because they don’t have to choose a mayor or aldermen at the November 15 elec- tions. Mayor Humphreys and all three incumbent aldermen candidates — Don Lanskail, Bob Hicks and John Humphries — were returned by acclamation last week for further two-year terms. In an interview Wed- nesday Humphreys said he felt it was fortunate that the mayoralty and aldermanic election was out of the way so that taxpayers could “focus their attention” on school board trustees and policies. “In view of the fact,” he said, “that the school board spends some 12 to 15 million dollars of local taxpayers’ money on the education of just under 6,000. school population, and the fact that this sum is greater than the whole of the municipal expenditure, it certainly demands close attention as to who 1s handling the affairs as school trustees.” NO CONTROL The mayor emphasized that he and his council have no control over the ex- penditures of the elected school board — for which the municipality merely acts as a tax collector. Relations between council and the school board had improved in recent years, said Humphreys, but he considered a much closer relationship was necessary in order to properly reflect “the needs and tenor of our society” in respect to the school system. In specific need of at- tention from all segments of the community, the mayor continued, were matters such as playing fields, police assistance, fire assistance, control of unwarranted damage, and the advent of drug and alcohol issues in the school spectrum. “The board of school trustees and the staff of the school district should in no way adopt an attitude of isolation,” he declared. Mayor Humphreys suggested that electors should closely question school board candidates on- their attitudes in respect to both the educational system and the economic and behavioral system within the school district.
