KAMPALA, Uganda (UPD -
Mobs of Kampala residents
have burned alive suspected
criminals in grisly street
corner justice — part of a
wave of terror and crime
apparently caused largely by
Uganda's fledgling army.

At least 50 people have
been killed in the capital
during each of the past two
weeks in the east African
nation’s increasing
lawlessness.

The government has
trained 5,600 men to replace
Tanzanian troops ,who
remained in the city since
the overthrow of dictator Idi
Amin one year ago.

moving out it seems their
role has been taken over by
the Ugandan army,” one
high-ranking Ugandan said
Sunday.

Because the government
appears unable to contain
the situation, residents of the
city have begun dispensing
jusuce on the sidewalk. In
one suburb alone, 17 ac-
cused criminals have been
burned alive in the last three
weeks.

Police say that suspected
criminals are frequently
turned over to crowds for
“execution,” accomphshed
by dousing the accused with
gasoline and leaving him to
burn to death in the street as
a warning to others.
