Cusack ‘guy’ growing up Bigh Fidelity *&k*&* (out of 5) Starring John Cusack and Iben Hijejle. Directed by Stephen Frears. “Lloyd, Lloyd, null and void.” The refrain kept creeping into my head as I giggled my way through High Fidelity, John Cusack’s latest explo- ration of guydom. The names are different, but if you ask me his High Fidelity character is just a peek at Lloyd Dobler (Cusack’s antihero from 1989's Say Anything) 16 years down the road: after the Ione Skye character has Gumped him; after the kick-boxing career doesn’t work out. Now he’s Rob Gordon, proprietor of Championship Vinyl. Barry and Dick (Jack Black and Todd Louisc) are Rob’s part- time employees but virtually inhabit the store. They are the type of guys you were always afraid you'd have to dance with when it was square dancing season in gym class. The store bears a strong resemblance to the one Molly Ringwald worked at in Pretty In Pink, where social outcasts found solace talking about the latest Joy Division Japanese import, and snubbing mainstream music consumers. pointless banter between Rob, Barry and Dick makes for some YOU SEE A LAWYER FOR ONE REASON They understand the paperwork and the evidence to be collected They have the knowledge and experience to assess the value of the claim They have the ability to collect a fair settlement THERE IS ONEY ONE REASON TO SEE A LAWYER...YOU NEED ONE ARDAGH HUNTER TURNER 986-4366 AFTER HOURS 926-3181 Criminal matters only. #300-1401 LONSDALE AVE. NORTH VAN. E-mail: harryh@ahtlaw.com funny scenes. Familiar too—we all know guys like these. Rob is a list man: top songs for a Monday morning, top five death songs... He’s trying to decide whether his breakup with Laura (Iben Hjejle) deserves entry into the top five most memorable breakups of all time. Flashbacks recount his less-than-illustrious love-life, beginning with grade school and moving through Charlie (Catherine Zeta- Jones), the artsy goddess, and manic depres- sive Sarah (Say Anything alumnus Lili Taylor), among others. We can see why Laura ran the other way. Rob can’t commit to anything, he’s got no ambition, and at times he has all the sunny disposition of a Smiths fan. Most of the time, Cusack’s character addresses the camera directly, a risky approach that has had fess hits and more misses over the years. But it works here, thanks to Stephen Frear’s artful direction and Cusack’s apparent ease with the camera. There are some memorable cameos, including sis Joan Cusack as a friend caught in the middle of Rob and Laura’s breakup, Lisa Bonet, Sara Gilbert, Natasha Gregson-Wagner, and even Bruce Springstein, who plays himself and doles out See Robbins Page i | a PRO KNOWLEDGE IN FILM & TV OF ce THE DIRECTING PROCESS FROM AN INDUSTRY WORKING DIRECTOR fo WITH AN INTENSIVE, AUDIO-VISUAL STUDY i FROM PAGE..TO SHOOT..TO FINAL FILM. a as “THE BEST, MOST INTENSIVE SEMINAR OF ANY & | = SORT THAT I HAVE EVER TAKEN!® barubn Polak-Write: Fy ~ “EXCELLENT...LINKS WORDS ON PAPER TO MAGIC ii LOVE FILM AT ALL LEVELS OF THEIR CAREERS.«. x We NOTHING SHORT OF INSPIRATIONAL!
