On board Ermest Shackleton led a crew af 27 men south to challenge nature for one of her few remaining records. Their gual was to be the first to cross the Antarctic continent on foor. Eighty-five miles from their intended base, the Endurance became trapped in the pack ice, and onc of history’s greatest survival stories began. Alexander’s text is largely drawn from the diarics of the crew members, which provide many points of view to their ordeal. Their story describes levels of perseverance most of us could not believe possible. For over pventy-two months the crew struggled to survive on the frozen landscape before finally being rescued. Us and Them, Scalo, 199 pages. THERE is a sense of the forbidden to this book, which examines a relationship of two artists over a period of fifty years. It is like finding a stranger’s personal photo album and being drawn uninvited to it’s pages. Helmut Newton blended Aaute couture and . eroticism, developing 2 style instantly recognizable and in the process staying controversial {hroughout his career. His wife, June Brunell, (she took the name Alice Springs for her professional name, by blindly sticking a pin into a map of Australia), was an actress who took up photography in 1970. Throughout their life together they have pho- tographed each other and it is these pictures that fill the book. Having often been accused of treating women like objects, Newton shows no reluctance to turn the table on himself, baring it all before the camera. This should come as no surprise, since nudes are'so fre- quently shown in his photos. The majority of the book is dedicated to images of the husband and wife photographed by each other and as self portraits. The final section, the “Them” of the title is a collection of portraits of people that they have both photographed. The different approach each photographer takes only serves to show the viewer more of the uniqueness of their subjects, While not for everyone, the images in Us 03 OR REFUSAL CHARGE?
