Currently, over 200 sites have been visited and educat- ed on all the new waste reduction initiatives. In fate 1998, the NSRP teamed up with two Environment Youth Team members for 16 wecks to design the Multi-Family Recycling Education Project. As part of this initiative, a package filled with recycling tips was created for North Shore buildings. The package is loaded with information on the expanded recycling program, newspaper and office paper bans, the bottle deposit leg- islation, composting, haz- ardous waste and other infor- mation. After a short 15 minute site visit with the NSRP, building management will be completely updated on how its building can reduce garbage. In addition, cach manager will receive an information package to help in educating other residents. “This project: has been extremely successful,” says Al 4 SRP manager. “We have seen an itterease in recyclables duc to the cHorts of building managers. The North Shore g Program is the pal agency thar plans and administers all waste reduction and recycling ivities on the North Shore. Its goal is to reduc solid waste by 50% per capita by the year 2000 (based on 1990 ievels). The North Shore has a long history of recycling. Prior to the establishment of the NSRP, the North Shore was one of the first areas in the Lower Mainland to recycle newspaper. In 1989, the three North Shore municipalities decided to siart a joint recycling pro- gram and share the costs. In carly 1990, International Paper Industries (IPT) was awarded the contract to pro- vide recycling collection ser- vices to the North Shore.
