Safeway spokesman Don Bell
recently said the company chore
stores in Richmond and Delta as
the first to get the bags because the
municipalities are close to
Safeway's head office and conse-

The bags, which are made by
Vancouver’s Sunbags International
Lid. (SIL) with «4 resin additive
known as Ecolyte, are broken
down by the sun's ultra violet
light.

SIL president Jim Hahn has said
the bags, if left outside, will
degrade into carbon dioxide and
water over six months or less,
depending on the amount and in-
tensity of sunlight they are exposed
to and the amount of Ecolyte used
in the plastic mix.

Conventional plastic materials
can last up to 20,000 years before
breaking down.

Ecolyte was developed at the
University of Toronto and is sold
in pellets that can be added to the
ingredients normally used in plastic
production.

SIL is currently finalizing plans
to set up an Ecolyte manufacturing
facility either in Langley or
Cloverdale.

Bell said Safeway’s decision to
use the bags results from the com-
pany’s ongoing concern with en-
vironmental issues in general and
the buildup of indestructible
plastic products in the environment
in particular.

Safeway, he said, already recy-
cles all its cardboard boxes and
will co-sponsor the provincial
Ministry of Environment's Gut-
doors Unlimited Pitch-In °88 litter
