IVErs about fog lai “DEAR Shaun. I always read and enjoy your column in the North Shove News, Whenever I am out dri- ving and witness some foolish act committed behind the wheel, your collection of articles on ‘boneheads’ comes to mind.” So reads a wonderful let- ter from West Vancouver resi- dent Hugh Mutien, avid Signals reader, and obviously a man with good taste. Hugh’s letter continues with an observation which has never really been covered in this column, which is sur- prising because of the num- ber of columns with repeat- themes over the last four and a half years. Finally, something new under the sun... “There is one act of annoyance I wish to share,” continues Hugh, “and offer up for comment, and ir is the use of fog lights. han Conlin signals “When | learned to drive 30-plus years ago, fog lights were for ase during reduced visibility in fog or heavy snow. “The reasoning behind the fog light is the flat wide design of the beam, which scatters almost no light above the hood of the car, thereby not ikuninating fog droplets or snow! flakes dirce cdy in front of the driver’s line of vision, “Nowadays many people seem to think fog lights are a status symbol or boost to one's self esteem and drive with thent turned on even on a sunny day. When someone uses fog lights as extra low- ‘lights? in the dark ips of low-beams only, and this creates considerable increased glare for an oncoming driver. “Come on, all you bone- heads, wake up and turn off the excess lights.” Well said, Hugh. And a good point. Hugh seems to have written this column for me save for a final paragraph which posed a question: “Now, Shaun,” he writes, “what does the Motor Vehicle Act say about the use of these popular accessory “Darn, Now [actually have to do some work, As it turns our, the mighty MVA has nothing to say on the mateer; we must refer to B.C.’s Regulations which do not actually forbid the use of both fog gehts and headlights at the same time, which is why overly-illumi- nated boneheads continue to be overly-illuminated bone- heads. Interestingly, the Regs do state that fog lamps must be hooked into vou tail lamp assembly, which is reasonable 2 $4000 DOWN 7 5.8% Financing beams on a rainy night they are putting nvice the wattage See Fog page 32 H Includes: Labor & installation of Tune-up i Parts.
