He’s the one person ar this point who will make Canada very proud and it will rake place in the not too dis- tant furure.” The game plan is ingenious. Adam H. has licensing agreements in Latin America with BMG Entertainment and Polygram-distributed Max Musi The song Saturday Night is featured on a BMG compilation dance CD. Another BMG retease features Push It Up and Can't Take My Pride, owo singles from the next full- -length cb. To soften the U.S, market, Adam H. dance tracks are going to record pools where DJs buy specially mixed vinyl for club play. Explains Heksoen, “We have licensed Onc-ofts, We're selectively releasing prod- uct and we're in the fortunate positicn to have people who want what we have and more importantly they're getting reaction in the marketplace and they want to sign us because they’re making moncy.” It’s an arrangement whereby several labels can have Adam H. product simulteneous- ly. Says Hektcen, “That’s how it’s work- ing in Latin America, This is a very unique situation. ~ “You get a Canadian artist signed toa major record label in Canada, you're vir- tually doomed, because the U. S. is not going to release that artist because he’s Canadian. It’s not there. They'll sign the acts faster out of Europe.” Adam H. breaking in Mexico City stands a better chance of breaking in the US. The Latin American marketplace has grown by 18.2% a year. It’s the fastest growing market segment in the music industry. To the rorth along the south- ern. United States from California to Florida there’s a growing markct of Spanish “speaking people in ali of the “ major, metropolitan areas. , Says-Hektoen, “That will give us impact. He's doing some songs in Spanish and English now so that we can hit both of those marker places. If we can walk in and show a label, listen, we're good for at feast 100,000 units coming out of the bex, that throws off a million bucks to them versus whatever the sign- ing numbers we get. That's just on the first single release. “We won't be able to licence then. We'll be signing to a company for exclu- ivity, bue we'll be able to dictate a better type ofa program. Our program is not going to be to get as much up front money as we want because that’s really toolish money. It’s necessary to get 2 good advance to maintain what we're doing, bus what we want is independent commitment so that we can bring in our own promotion people, our marketing people, our publicity team, so we have an Adam H. army supporting the major label's efforts. “If you get this tig machine and they’ve got 10 ,0C0 releases coming, out a year and you're one of 50 releases com- ing out that month in this music genre alone, it’s 2 ceal crap shoot. You go in and make your deal good up front and you’ *ve got your own team working, you’ve got a real shot of propelling y your record ahead of all the competition.” Adam’s chameleon blend of dance, R&B and reggae is ear can ¥ for young Latin America. He’s bcen playing “DAT™ shows in recent months live to thousands in Mexico. Says Adam, “You go into a concert and you bring DAT (digital audio tape) tapes and you sing five over top of it with dancers.” Hekzoen pians to make the music machine work for the Adam H. army. ° “Record companies aren’t signing unless they chink they're going to sell niulii-mil- lions. It’s nat abour the art, it’s about sales,” he maintains. Three years after the fact, the debut disc is doing extremely well for Adam E. in Latin America. It’s all happening very fast now, A year and a half ago Adam took his first rausic trip to’ Mexico City and got air play on Radio Planeta. “We went bac Friday, july 10, 1998 — North Shore News — 27 ; Bi a home and J got a phone call that one of my songs ( Shining Star, a duct with The Manhattans on the 1995 release) went to number one.” Along with Saturday Night, a song that was a hit for the Bay City Rollers all those years ago, he sud- denly found himself with nvo songs charting top 10 in the country. Adam went back to visit the labels in Mexico City this year and nwo CD singles were released by BMG in Latin America. His song Push It Upis going gangbusters. He's getting radio play with Alfa Radio in Mexico City, one of the biggest radio sta- tions in the world with an audience of Li inillion people. Right now Pus it Up is the air every hour and a half to wo rs. That's heavy rotation. Mexico City is the hub of the Latin American music wheel. What's big there rends to do well in South America, Spain and Italy. If it’s all about the peso then where does art fit in the world of Adam H.? Says Adam, “That's why I opened a szu- dio, because 1 car, make all the music I want. I like the business side of it, bur the reason I have a studio is so I can make the art and I never lose sight of that. Cart (Schmidt), the engineer and me are in here day and night working non-stop.” He's branching out to other projects. Adam is writing and producing two songs for a hot Backstreet Boys-like group in Spain called Providence. In December he launched Global Music Group Ltd. along with North Vancouver's Andre Urrea, who is origi- nally from Colombia. They invested approximately $100,000 in recording equipment. Says Adam, “We wanted to start finding other artists, write, produce and licence them.” They've found Uschi, a 16-year-old girl who lives in Buenos “Aires, Argentina. A CD, being recorded in West’ Vancouver, i is in the works. The pop artist 7 sings in English, German, Italian and French. Max Music already likes what it hears and on the strength of some demo tracks signed a deal. The demo is already being played on radio in Latin America. ~~ TOP 10 LIST New Orleans brass band CDs 1.
